Enthralled by Port Douglas

The Port Douglas resort is just what the doctor ordered.  We drove from Mackay alongside the coastal mountains and rain forests in a little over ten hours.  The open plan tropical themed reception area initially enthralled us, as the staff and resident cockatoo welcomed us.

The resort was still undergoing refurbishment, but we were not inconvenienced in any way. The gardens and surrounds were totally in keeping with the wet tropics, with the waterway having its own resident barramundi.

One imagines Port Douglas in January to be hot, humid and very wet.  We were surprised to find that the humidity and heat were less than we experience in Mackay. What rain we had occurred as heavy showers in the afternoon and evening, wet but pleasant.  They did not interfere with our activities.

Apart from enjoying the resort facilities, we explored various dining locations and did our bit to add to our body weight.  We also journeyed to the Atherton Tablelands and experienced the magic of the thundering Barron Falls.

While the room did not have self-contained facilities – and we knew that when we booked – we understand the refurbishing will take care of that.  We look forward to the refurbishing being completed and are already are planning ahead to see when we might be able to return for another very enjoyable stay.
